Introduction
The Egas Moniz Higher School of Health (ESSEM) Undergraduate Degree in Nursing combines theoretical and theoretical-practical training with a strong practical component. Students will have internships in hospitals, health care centres and nursing homes right from the first to the last year of their degree. This allows you to acquire the technical skills you need to care for healthy or sick people throughout the various different stages of their life cycle, without foregoing the nurse’s social skills, interpersonal relations and patient focus, which are so important for a healthcare professional. As Florence Nightingale, considered to be the founder of modern nursing, stated: “Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with what having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts; I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts.” As a profession, a nurse’s presence is mandatory in any team that provides health care, requiring a high scientific and technical preparation and a strong human component of proximity with the patient. In a hospital setting, where their action is more emblematic, nurses are an indispensable element with well-defined tasks, autonomy and professional responsibility. Aware of the challenges posed every day on nurses and the complexity of the health and disease situations they face, the ESSEM Undergraduate Degree in Nursing prepares competent nurses, capable of joining health care teams and responding to any request. The ageing population, the value placed on preventing diseases and the added need for care, not just at a hospital level, but also at a community and home level, make this profession a sure wager for the future. Nursing is a prestigious occupation, with good employability levels and the reflection of this and the quality of our degree is the wide acceptance our nurses experience in the labour market in Portugal and abroad. If you are seeking a profession with a high human component, if you are tailored to help, if you like others, then nursing is your future!
