Microbiology and Molecular Biology
Introduction
The Vocational-Technical Course in Micro and Molecular Biology is a vocational training offer. This is a short higher education study cycle that runs for four school semesters, level 5 training on the OECD ISCED. The course has a general and scientific training component, a technical training component and a training in a work setting component, which is the internship during the course’s last semester.
The Syllabus is structured so as to offer students knowledge and the capacity to plan, adapt, implement and optimise protocols/techniques in Micro and Molecular Biology, as well as reagent and biological material stock management, enabling a specialised preparation in organising experimental work in the referred to fields, ensuring solid technical training.
A Vocational Training Course will grant students a Higher Vocational Technical Diploma, and with this diploma they can enter the labour market or else pursue higher education studies.
Accordingly, students who obtain a Higher Professional Technical Course Diploma in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from ESSEM can:
- Start their professional activity, since they have acquired higher-type education and have developed technical and specialised skills
- Join an undergraduate degree at ESSEM through a special application process without having to sit exams and obtain equivalence for the curriculum units, that is, the vocational-technical course can be credited to the undergraduate degree they have chosen and been admitted to

- Secondary and higher education institutions’ laboratories
- Food and chemical industry
- Specialised equipment companies
- Private laboratories (hospital units, veterinary clinics, etc.);
- National Health Service medical testing laboratories.
